Nothing Launches Phone (1), Tiny Nokia T10 Tablet, Pixel 7 Pro Leaks

[ad_1]

Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes powerful Galaxy Z Fold 4 specs, stunning Pixel 7 Pro leak, Asus’ Zenphone 9 details, Nothing launching Phone (1), Nokia’s tiny tablet, Android 13 draws ever closer, and a high-five is coming to your keyboard.

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

The Sizes And The Colours Of The Fold

As the expected August launch date approaches, more details on Samsung’s flagship foldable – the Z Fold 4 – are coming out. The latest comes from noted industry watcher Evan Blass, with more information on both the three storage options and the four colors the South Korean company will be offering:

“The base model of the device will have 128GB of memory while the other two models will pack 256GB and 512GB of storage… Coming to the color options, the screenshot shared by the tipster reveals that the Beige, Grey-Green, and Phantom Black color options will be available across all configurations, while the Burgundy Red color will be offered with the 256GB and 512GB storage variants only.”

Pixel 7 Pro Leaked And Bricked

The obvious follow-up to last year’s Pixel 6 Pro, the presumptively-named Pixel 7 Pro, has been discussed in the wild once more, with a 7 Pro unit allegedly shipped “by mistake” instead. We have pictures on the unit that match previous leaks… as for the software, it appears Google has remotely wiped the unit:

“Regardless of how the user got a hold of the prototype, it appears to be legitimate. As you can see in the photos below, there’s the typical Google prototype logo on the back. You can also see the rear panel in full, consistent with what Google teased last May…. However, Google most likely wiped the prototype clean via remote command shortly after it was shipped. According to the leaker, the unit is now stuck in an endless boot loading loop.”

Asus Define The New Compact With Zenfone 9

Asus’ next regular smartphone (as opposed to its ROG gaming phones), the Zenphone 9, will be unveiled on July 28th. According to the press release “…ASUS will showcase novel UI improvements and tunings, allowing Zenfone 9 users to enjoy the intuitiveness and flexibility of a one-handed smartphone experience. Other new software improvements, combined with an extensive range of optional accessories, help users capture memories anytime, anywhere.” For long-time smartphone watchers, pitching a 5.9 inch screen as a “compact” feels out of step given history. Still, this modern compact looks to have specs that will match the regular flagships:

“Asus hasn’t divulged anything about the Zenfone 9 other than showing us the front side of the smartphone. However, an official promo video that leaked last week revealed the Zenfone 9’s design and specs, including the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, 5.9″ 120Hz AMOLED screen, 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera with gimbal, and a 4,300 mAh battery.”

Nothing Launches The Phone (1)

This week sees the long-anticipated launch of Nothing Tech’s Phone (1). Thanks to co-founder Carl Pei’s previous smartphone experience, there’s a lot of attention on the Android-powered handset, its minimalist design, and the intricate LED notification system built into the rear of the handset. But it faces several challenges as it looks to establish itself:

“…will it sell? All of the niceties around design, the minimal interface, the Android compatibility, defining the target market… that doesn’t matter if you can’t sell the phone. And that is the great unknown. Nothing may have lined up everything possible ahead of the launch, but now the biggest challenge is the simplest one.”

A Tiny Tablet From Finland

HMD Global has announced its second tablet under the Nokia brand name. The Nokia T10 is an eight-inch tablet targeting the budget market. It will offer two years of Android software updates and three years of security updates, with support for 4G LTE connectivity on some models:

“The tablet is powered by a Unisoc T606 processor, which is an 8-core chip with two ARM Cortex-A75 CPU cores and six Cortex-A55 cores paired with Mali-G57 graphics. Entry-level models have just 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, but higher-priced configurations should be available with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There’s also a microSD card reader with support for cards up to 512GB.”

Android 13 Gets Ever Closer

Google’s Android development team is putting the final touches on the official release of Android 13. That’s expected in the next few weeks; before then we have one last public beta (the fourth) for final testing:

“Today’s update includes a release candidate build of Android 13 for Pixel devices and the Android Emulator. We reached Platform Stability at Beta 3, so all app-facing surfaces are final, including SDK and NDK APIs, app-facing system behaviors, and restrictions on non-SDK interfaces. With these and the latest fixes and optimizations, Beta 4 gives you everything you need to complete your testing.”

And Finally…

It’s always an exciting time when new emojis are on the way, and we could have an exciting addition in Unicode 15… a high-five!

“Perhaps the two most impactful additions are a pink heart, as well as “pushing hands.” The former has been a request of many over the years, while the latter finally gives the community an official “high-five” emoji… For years, the “Folded Hands” emoji has been used for a high-five, but that emoji is officially only meant to represent prayer, thanks, praise, and similar actions.
